While you are visiting Broken Hill, a visit to the Line of Lode is an absolute must. Drive with Campervan Hire Sydney around Broken Hill until you arrive in the middle of the city and you will find this special, new building, which is basically a commemorative, but a memorial with a difference and related to the mining history of the town.
Broken Hill is basically divided in two by a mulloch heap, that has become part of the Broken Hill townscape and is one of the things which distinguishes the city from other Australian mining towns. As per other unique attractions in Broken Hill, it is not surprising that the Line of Lode Commemorative and Restaurant is found on the edge of the mulloch heap.
The Line of Lode is the name of the first Broken Hill mine and the encircling mulloch heaps are the waste from the mine. The memorial is testament to the history of the city and is a dramatic steel structure which conjures up the claustrophobic interior of an underground mine, which was a home to the underground miners. Over 800 miners lost their lives in the Line of Lode, which by any world standards, is a great deal.
Passage through the building is accompanied by audio-visuals of miners working and the damp environment is made by running water which flows beside the trail and the overall effect is one of uncomfortable work conditions. Coming into a bigger, open space is a relief before a walk across a steel walkway, way up above the the mulloch heap, en route to the Miner\’s Commemorative.
The structure is basically two buildings which are united by steel structures and it\’s unique structure can be adapted to iconic standing in the mining industry, and particularly, Broken Hill. The Commemorative contains over 800 names and poignantly reminds visitors of the perils of the industry. If possible, visit at nightfall when it's most dramatic.
